Background

Closes #1679. Chat requests with several turns previously could not deliver complete history to the native text Task. This adds the conversational workload after merged stage A (#1803).

Exit Criteria

  • Preserve ordered user/assistant history through the existing server and family-owned native formatting.
  • Run pinned two-turn conversations using published AIPerf, with actual native answers retained and explicit think time.
  • Pass unchanged family correctness on the exact served bundle and verify every measured turn and separate warmup.

Implementation

Qwen binds the existing native TextConversation contract for its supported ChatML templates. Qwen owns role rendering, tokenization and prior-thinking removal, checked against the pinned Hugging Face template. The generic worker forwards typed messages and advertises the capability. The HTTP server accepts bounded text histories, forwards all roles/content, and rejects unsupported history streaming, tools or non-text messages. Existing single-turn generation and streaming retain their existing paths.

The optional profiler uses AIPerf's existing multi_turn loader. A workload configuration for the existing full Qwen3-0.6B FP16 profile selects six distinct fitting ShareGPT human/assistant/human prefixes. It sends the two original human strings and retains the actual model answer for the second request; source assistant answers are not replayed. The second turn has 50 ms think time. Verification joins phase/correlation/request identities, original user strings, actual prior assistant output and native hashes. Complete rendered history is counted using the pinned tokenizer. Server records retain hashes/counts/roles, without raw message text.

No new checkpoint, model spec/manifest, native Task contract, ABI, bundle format, dependency, numerical criterion or CI gate is added. Rebuild the native server and Qwen runtime library for history support; existing engine bundles can be reused.

Commands and Results

Current head: 8187eb46d2f2959c617d20805dcfba4110e3126e. Review found that an extra incomplete profiling correlation group could evade set coverage; the verifier now requires both turns in every profiling group. Regression coverage rejects that extra group after full original coverage and preserves intentionally partial warmup. The review conversation is fixed and resolved.

The app, source, detached-review and exact-bundle PyPI results below were rerun on this head. Native C++ sources and documentation are unchanged from validated parent 9141cac416c16ce4e491835a20822e7ff69a3428; their earlier build/check results are explicitly noted:

  • python -m pytest apps/server/python/tests apps/perf_serving/tests apps/aiperf_qual/tests --import-mode=importlib -q: 756 passed, two existing optional-dependency skips.
  • Detached current-head review: python -m pytest apps/aiperf_qual/tests/test_text_profile.py apps/aiperf_qual/tests/test_text_corpus.py apps/aiperf_qual/tests/test_text_conversations.py apps/server/python/tests/test_app.py -q: 52 passed, including actual installed-client CLI parsing.
  • ctest --test-dir build -R 'server_worker|server_sdk_worker|test_qwen_chat_templates' --output-on-failure: 4 passed. Native Qwen/server/CLI/backend targets compiled successfully; these four CTests ran on parent 9141cac4, whose native sources are byte-identical to the current verifier-only fix.
  • python -m tools.ci pipeline source-quality: PASS, including all 307 source tests on this head.
  • npm --prefix website run build: PASS on parent 9141cac4, including 14 model-support tests and the production website build; documentation is unchanged by the final verifier-only fix.
  • git diff --check: PASS.
  • python -m pytest families/qwen/tests/test_e2e.py --e2e-model qwen3-0.6b-fp16 -q: 8 passed, 13 unselected skips. Both requested unchanged full cases executed: canonical reference correctness and native KV two-chunk parity. They used the exact served bundle and newly compiled Qwen library, through the existing prebuilt-bundle mechanism, with unchanged references/criteria.
  • python -m trtmc_aiperf_qual text-profile --environment environment.yaml --config qwen3-0.6b-conversations.yaml --out artifacts/qwen-conversations: PASS using host interpreter/runtime/bundle paths with the checked-in configuration. Actual pip-installed AIPerf 0.13.0 ran nonstreaming /v1/chat/completions, six conversations / twelve measured turns plus two separate warmup requests, concurrency one, greedy sampling and sixteen-token generation caps. All 14 original-input/history/native-output joins verified; zero client/native errors, unmatched requests or missing metric exports. Complete pinned-tokenizer histories fit context 256; observed measured think gaps were 49.893–50.660 ms for the configured 50 ms.
Measured turns Client latency p50 / p95 Native Task wall p50 / p95 Requests/s including think gaps
12 44.763 / 50.713 ms 42.972 / 49.012 ms 14.082

Additional controls on parent 9141cac4 verify that the family-rendered bytes match the pinned tokenizer template in 12/12 history/thinking/Unicode cases. Native HTTP history controls returned ORCHID and KESTREL respectively for the same final question after different earlier code words; both passed on that parent separately from timing. Their native C++ implementation is unchanged. Build/load/startup/warmup are excluded from measured requests. Nonstreaming history does not expose TTFT/ITL.

Six conversations were selected from twelve considered source rows; five lacked a valid alternating prefix and one exceeded the budget.

Not Run / Remaining Gaps

Remote CI is pending on the current head. The review finding is fixed, verified and resolved; CodeRabbit is green. Local hardware qualification covers the existing Qwen3-0.6B FP16 pilot on GB300. Other families, hardware/precisions, history streaming, tools, media and structured reasoning are not qualified here. Native input counts remain unavailable; tokenizer counts are reported explicitly. Timing is descriptive for this fixed workload, not a capacity claim.

Notes For Future Readers

Review Qwen's family-owned formatter/binding first, then capability-based worker/HTTP dispatch and conversation verification. No other family or shared model semantics changed. Existing single-turn rendering and native generation math are preserved. AIPerf carries actual previous answers, so complete history must fit the bundle; no prior turn is silently dropped. Stages C–F follow in separate PRs after this merges.

Risk level

  • Medium
  • High

This adds a native history path and bounded HTTP support. Existing Task contracts and single-turn behavior are preserved, while protocol controls, reference-template byte parity and full-model correctness cover the new path.

Forward ordered text messages through the existing TextConversation SDK. Keep Qwen chat rendering and tokenization family-owned, and reuse published AIPerf multi-turn loading with live assistant responses and explicit think time.

Verify every original user turn and retained native answer by conversation and request identity, and report client and Task timings per turn. Existing models, bundles, core contracts and numerical criteria remain unchanged.

📝 Summary

Summary

Adds bounded, non-streaming multi-turn text history to the native serving path. The worker forwards typed messages through a TextConversation capability. The server accepts up to 64 messages and rejects unsupported models, streaming history, tools, and non-text content.

Qwen owns ChatML rendering, tokenization, and removal of prior assistant reasoning. The implementation supports chatml and chatml_thinking and checks conversation validity before generation.

Adds an optional AIPerf qualification workflow using six pinned ShareGPT conversations, two measured turns per conversation, two warmups, and a configured 50 ms think time. Verification joins conversation and request identities, checks original user inputs and actual prior assistant responses, and counts tokens from the rendered template. Server records retain hashes, counts, and roles rather than raw message text.

Validation reported

The author reports 754 tests passed with two optional-dependency skips, 50 detached-head tests passed, and four selected native CTest targets passed. The author also reports passing source-quality checks, website build, diff check, and specified Qwen end-to-end tests.

The reported AIPerf 0.13.0 run verified 14 input/history/native-output joins, with no client or native errors and no unmatched requests. Measured think gaps were 49.634–50.517 ms. Qualification covers only the existing Qwen3-0.6B FP16 profile on GB300. Other model families, hardware, and precisions are not qualified. Non-streaming history does not expose TTFT/ITL. Native input counts are unavailable. Remote CI and review remain pending.

Architecture impact

  • Family-owned files: families/qwen/runtime/chat_templates.* and families/qwen/runtime/pipeline.* contain Qwen-specific template, thinking, and conversation behavior.
  • Changed shared surfaces: The native worker, server protocol and schemas, and Python server app now support capability-based conversation dispatch and typed history. The AIPerf qualification package, configuration, tests, and documentation add the optional workload and its verification.
  • Dependency direction: The shared worker dispatches through the TextConversation contract when the model advertises that capability. Qwen implements the contract. The AIPerf qualification tooling consumes the serving endpoint and records run evidence.
  • Affected consumers: Native text-serving clients can send history to models that advertise TextConversation. Existing generation and streaming paths are reported unchanged. Qwen is the only family qualified by the supplied evidence.
  • Unresolved blast radius: The supplied evidence does not establish compatibility across all consumers of the changed shared worker and server surfaces, or support across other model families. Remote CI is pending.
  • Review outcome: HUMAN REVIEW REQUIRED. The supplied evidence leaves material shared-consumer compatibility and blast-radius questions unresolved. This is not a claim that a violation was found or that the change passed review.

The change adds nonstreaming text-history support for native conversation-capable models, including Qwen ChatML templates. It also adds AIPerf multi-turn corpus preparation, request verification, turn-level summaries, and a pinned Qwen3-0.6B profiling example.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The server and worker changes implement bounded native text history and capability-based dispatch. The Qwen changes implement family-owned conversation rendering and generation. The profiler, verifier, configuration, tests, and documentation implement the linked issue's qualification, accounting, reproducibility, and protocol requirements. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Family Ownership Boundary

Explanation

No cross-family dependency is introduced. The only model-family files changed are under families/qwen; their new code uses Qwen-owned chat_templates.* and pipeline.*, and the shared trtmc/internal/language.h conversation contract. The Qwen CMake target links only shared trtmc_core and standard dependencies. The qualification config references the same family’s families/qwen/tests/test_e2e.py. No other family, family registry, switch, strategy map, or source list is changed.

Full details: Shared Change Blast Radius

Explanation

The PR changes shared HTTP, native-worker, capability, and AIPerf qualification surfaces, and it documents the need and scope. The /v1/chat/completions consumer accepts bounded text history, gates it on the advertised text_conversation capability, rejects streaming history, and preserves single-turn generation. The native worker forwards typed messages through the existing model-agnostic ITextConversation contract and advertises capability per model. The AIPerf changes add the generic sharegpt_multi_turn flow and retain the existing single-turn path. The description and docs identify Qwen as the family-owned formatter and tokenizer, while the server and worker must remain generic to serve any model implementing the existing contract. Tests cover forwarding, capability rejection, recoverable worker errors, history verification, and compatibility paths. Validation results are also recorded in the PR description.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and follows the repository template. It covers background, exit criteria, implementation, change categories, validation results, environment and revisions, remaining gaps, self-review, notes, and risk rationale.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

#1679 requires qualification for the existing supported model/spec group for this text workload. The PR qualifies only Qwen3-0.6B FP16 and states that other families, hardware, and precisions are not qualified. The implementation covers the Qwen history path, capability dispatch, bounded HTTP history, identity-based accounting, context-limit rejection, separate warmups, and the published AIPerf run. The reported tests and native controls support the Qwen pilot. The PR provides no qualification or unsupported-status evidence for the remaining existing supported model/specs.

Resolution

Qualify each remaining existing supported model/spec for this workload, or record concrete evidence that each one is unsupported for this integration. Retain the existing correctness criteria and provide the required per-model qualification evidence before marking #1679 complete.

Full details: Shared Semantic Neutrality

Explanation

The prior failure remains unresolved. The PR adds apps/aiperf_qual/config/text/qwen3-0.6b-conversations.yaml, a shared qualification configuration file. It hard-codes Qwen checkpoint and tokenizer revisions, FP16 precision, Qwen bundle and model name, Qwen validation profile and E2E command, and a pinned ShareGPT dataset. The shared text_profile.py and text_corpus.py consume these configuration fields. This introduces model-specific qualification configuration, dataset selection, and validation evidence outside a model-owned or family-owned directory. The native dispatch changes are capability-based and are not the failure.

Resolution

Move the Qwen-specific checkpoint, tokenizer, bundle, validation profile and command, and pinned dataset/workload configuration out of apps/aiperf_qual/config/text into an appropriate Qwen-owned configuration location. Keep shared qualification code and configuration model-agnostic, with family-owned data supplied through the existing narrow contract.

Full details: Benchmark Validation Integrity

Explanation

The prior failure remains unresolved. The PR adds per_turn by filtering rows by turn_index and passing them to summarize (text_profile.py:312-314). summarize computes elapsed time from the earliest request start to the latest request end (:192-194), but reports turn-only request and output-token numerators (:201 and :217). With sequential two-turn conversations, those intervals include the other turn and configured think time, so the per-turn throughput metrics measure different semantic regions. The full-workload summary remains valid, but per_turn exposes invalid throughput metrics. No regression test prevents this accounting error.

Resolution

Keep throughput metrics only in the full-workload summary. In per_turn, omit successful_requests_per_second and client_output_tokens_per_second_estimate, or compute them from explicitly defined intervals containing only that turn and excluding other-turn requests and think time. Add a test that supplies interleaved turn rows and verifies that per-turn output cannot report throughput from the combined span.

Exercise successful converse dispatch in the SDK-worker test.

The current requests are rejected before task.run, so they do not test role mapping, conversation configuration, result text, or returned metrics. The ready event only proves that the operation is advertised.

Use a fixture that accepts the worker's text-only history. The current stream_fixture cannot use the proposed system/user/assistant/user case: its conversation implementation requires system/assistant/tool/user, two tools, and typed tool parts, while the worker accepts only system, user, and assistant roles.

Assert the successful response fields, including completion_tokens, setup_ms, prefill_ms, decode_ms, and timing_scope, after the request reaches task.run.

Current head 8187eb46d2f2959c617d20805dcfba4110e3126e has passed Stable Community CI and the required automated internal premerge gate. CodeRabbit is green and the review conversation is fixed, verified and resolved.

Local checks on this head passed: 756 app tests (two existing optional skips), 52 focused/detached tests, 307 source tests, both unchanged full Qwen correctness cases on the served FP16 bundle, and the real PyPI AIPerf 0.13.0 workload. All six conversations / twelve measured turns plus two separate warmup requests verified original inputs, live assistant history and native outputs, with zero errors.

The optional Dev Community CI run remains queued and has no model result. It is not being represented as green or as a model failure. Merging once the unchanged required checks are satisfied, following the owner's existing merge policy used for the earlier stages. No model contracts, numerical criteria, CI configuration or merge rules were changed.

Post-merge CI clarification for tested head 8187eb46d2f2959c617d20805dcfba4110e3126e: the optional Dev status now reports failure because the Source coordinator timed out waiting for completion after five hours. The Dev child run remains pending with no jobs or model result. The Dev execution has not produced a native model-validation result.

The exact-head required automated premerge gate and Stable Community CI remain successful. The existing Qwen3-0.6B full FP16 bundle was verified locally on GB300 with both requested unchanged full owning cases executed non-skipped, followed by actual published AIPerf 0.13.0 qualification: six two-turn conversations: twelve measured requests plus two warmups, all fourteen history/input/output/native joins verified with no errors. The PR retains the tested revision, bundle/checkpoint identity and commands.

This is a coordination/provisioning result, without an observed model-correctness or OOM test result. No model/test criterion, exclusion, CI configuration or merge rule is changed, and the optional Dev run is not counted as passing.
